# byte-at Raw byte value (0-255) at a byte index — the binary-safe counterpart of `char-at`. Use for byte-oriented data (protocol parsing, encoded blobs); text code wants `char-at`. ## Syntax
[byte-at $string $index]
## Examples
[byte-at "a中c" 1] # 228 (0xE4, the lead byte of 中)
[byte-at "abc" 0] # 97
## Returns Number 0-255, or nil if out of range. ## See Also `char-at`, `cells`
