# clock/clicks
Return a high-resolution monotonic timestamp in nanoseconds. Unlike the
other `clock/` primitives this value is not anchored to the epoch — it is
only meaningful as a difference between two samples. Use it for elapsed-time
and profiling measurements.
## Syntax
[clock/clicks]
## Returns
Integer nanoseconds from an arbitrary monotonic origin (number).
## Examples
set start [clock/clicks] # … do work … set elapsed-ns ([clock/clicks] - $start) echo "took" ($elapsed-ns / 1000000) "ms"
## Notes
- The origin is unspecified and may differ between runs and processes.
- Monotonic means the value never goes backwards, so it is safe for timing
even across wall-clock adjustments.
