# gc/census
Diagnostic: walk the live heap object list (without collecting) and report
per-kind counts, total string bytes, and the 12 largest live strings with
snippets. Run after `[gc/collect]` to see what is still reachable when
`:live-bytes` will not come down.
## Syntax
[gc/census]
## Examples
[gc/collect] [gc/census] # → %{ :live-objects 10461 # :string-count 6762 # :string-bytes 255635 # :kinds %{ :map 1497 :string 6762 :vector 831 :keyword 80 … } # :top-strings @{ %{ :len 22662 :snippet "# Two-column" } … } }
## Returns
A map with `:live-objects`, `:string-count`, `:string-bytes`, `:kinds`
(a map of object-kind keyword → count, non-zero kinds only), and
`:top-strings` (up to 12 `%{ :len N :snippet "…" }` maps, snippets capped at
60 chars). Collection is suppressed while the walk runs; `nil` without a VM
context.
