# image/open
Load an image file and decode it to RGBA8. The format is sniffed from magic
bytes (JPEG/PNG/WebP) — the file extension is ignored. Returns an `Image` or
`nil`; a missing or undecodable file is never an error.
## Syntax
[image/open $path]
## Parameters
- `$path` — filesystem path (string)
## Examples
set img [image/open "test/fixtures/images/test.png"] # → Image [image/dims $img] # → %{ :w 8 :h 6 } [image/open "missing.png"] # → nil [image/open "notes.txt"] # → nil
## Returns
An `Image` native resource holding decoded RGBA8 pixels, or `nil` when the
file cannot be read or is not a decodable JPEG/PNG/WebP. The decoded source
format becomes the image's default output format.
